How an In-Room Blood Test Works

An attending doctor visits your accommodation, takes a history and, where relevant, examines you, then decides whether a blood test is clinically appropriate and which tests are needed. The sample is drawn on the spot using sterile equipment and sent to an accredited pathology laboratory for processing. This avoids a trip to a laboratory branch or a clinic while you are unwell or simply do not want to lose part of a day to travel and waiting rooms.

This is particularly useful for visitors staying somewhere without easy access to transport, for those managing symptoms that make travel unpleasant, and for anyone who would simply rather not spend a morning of a short holiday sitting in a laboratory waiting room. The trade-off is that results are not instant: a laboratory-processed test still takes the time a laboratory test takes, wherever it is drawn.

Because the decision about which tests to order is a clinical one, we do not offer a pre-selected panel to book online. The doctor examines you first and orders what is actually indicated by your symptoms and history, in the same way any doctor would before ordering a blood test anywhere else.

When a Blood Test Is Useful

Common reasons a visiting doctor might recommend a blood test include suspected infection, unexplained fever, ongoing fatigue that does not fit an obvious cause, monitoring a known chronic condition while you are away from your usual doctor, or confirming a diagnosis the doctor suspects from your symptoms and examination. Some conditions are diagnosed on examination alone and do not need a blood test at all; others genuinely benefit from laboratory confirmation before deciding on treatment.

For visitors with a known chronic condition such as diabetes or a thyroid disorder, a periodic blood test can also simply be a matter of continuity of care while abroad, confirming that levels remain stable rather than investigating a new problem. The doctor can discuss with you what monitoring, if any, makes sense for the length and nature of your stay.

Combining a Blood Test With Other Care

A blood test is often ordered as part of a broader consultation rather than as a stand-alone request. If you contact us with a general concern such as ongoing fatigue or an unclear illness, the doctor will examine you, decide what investigations if any are appropriate, and may recommend a blood test alongside other treatment rather than as the only step taken during the visit.

Accredited Laboratory Processing

Samples are processed by an accredited South African pathology laboratory rather than any in-house or unaccredited testing. We do not name a specific laboratory provider on this page, since which laboratory processes a given sample can depend on the attending doctor's usual referral arrangements; if you have a preference or a specific laboratory your travel insurer requires, mention this when you contact us and we will confirm whether it can be accommodated.

Turnaround Time

How long results take depends on which tests were ordered. Some basic tests can be processed within hours; others, particularly more specialised panels, take longer. The doctor who orders the test will give you a realistic estimate for the specific tests ordered rather than a single figure that would not actually be accurate across every kind of test. Results are communicated to you by the doctor once available, along with an explanation of what they mean and any next steps.

What a Visit Includes

The visit itself follows the same pattern as any other consultation on this site: the doctor examines you, discusses what they are looking for and why, draws the sample if a blood test is indicated, and explains what happens next. If your condition needs more than a blood test, such as immediate treatment or referral to a hospital, the doctor will address that as part of the same visit rather than treating the blood draw as a separate, standalone service.

Travel Insurance and Medical Reports

A written clinical report covering the consultation, the reason for the test, and the result once available can be provided on request. This is often useful for a travel insurance claim, particularly where an insurer wants documented evidence of the diagnosis and treatment before reimbursing consultation and laboratory costs.

Keep in mind that reimbursement depends entirely on your own policy's terms, not on anything we can promise. We provide the documentation; whether and how much is reimbursed is between you and your insurer.

Children and Blood Tests

Blood tests are sometimes needed for children as well as adults, for example to investigate a persistent fever that does not fit an obvious cause. The attending doctor adjusts both the examination and, where a test is indicated, the approach to the blood draw for a child's age and comfort. As with adults, whether a test is needed at all is a clinical decision made after examining the child, not something decided in advance online.

Fasting and Preparation

Certain blood tests require fasting beforehand, while most do not. Because which tests are appropriate is only decided during the visit, we cannot tell you in advance whether fasting will be required for your specific situation. If the doctor determines during the visit that a fasting test would be more accurate, they will discuss with you whether to proceed with a non-fasting alternative or arrange a follow-up visit after a period of fasting, depending on the urgency of what is being investigated.

Booking

When you book, we just need your accommodation address and a number to reach you on. POPIA keeps the form itself symptom-free, so whether a blood test is actually needed gets worked out with the doctor by phone or in person. The fee for the visit is paid to the doctor directly, once it is done.

Beyond Groote Schuur and New Somerset

Groote Schuur and New Somerset are not the only public hospitals a doctor might refer you to if a result needs hospital-level follow-up. Tygerberg Hospital in Parow is a public tertiary teaching hospital linked to Stellenbosch University's medical faculty, covering the northern suburbs and beyond. Victoria Hospital in Wynberg serves the Southern Suburbs and the Constantia valley on the same public, government-funded basis.

Which one makes sense, if any, depends entirely on where you are staying and what the result actually shows. A normal or mildly abnormal result usually needs nothing more than the doctor's own follow-up call; referral is the exception, reserved for findings that genuinely cannot wait for your own doctor back home to review.
